Kültürel miras varlıkları, endüstriyel alanlar da dâhil olmak üzere, somut ve somut olmayan bağlar kurarak toplumsal kimliklerin şekillenmesinde önemli bir rol oynar. Endüstriyel miras, 20. yüzyılın ortalarında, geleneksel endüstrilerin küresel çapta gerilemesiyle eş zamanlı olarak yeni bir çalışma alanı olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu dönemde ve sonrasında birçok fabrika, maden ocakları, demiryolu ve diğer endüstriyel yapı terk edilmiş, bu da tarihsel, kültürel ve teknik önemlerini fark eden akademisyenler, mimarlar ve koruma uzmanlarının dikkatini çekmektedir. Bu alanların günümüzde kullanılabilmesi, korunması ve yeniden işlevlendirilmesi, sürdürülebilir bir gelecek anlatısı oluşturmayı hedefleyen kapsamlı koruma uygulamaları ve stratejik planlama gerektirir. Türkiye'de endüstriyel mirasın korunması, sınırlı kamu farkındalığı, mali kısıtlamalar, yasal boşluklar ve yapıların fiziksel bozulması gibi zorluklarla karşı karşıya olduğu için yeterli düzeyde gelişmemiştir. Bu tez, topluluk temelli ve sanatçı odaklı miras yaklaşımları aracılığıyla endüstri mirasının uyarlanabilir yeniden kullanımını inceleyerek dönüşüm süreçlerine ve disiplinler arası sanatsal pratiklerin katkılarına ilişkin kapsamlı bir bakış açısı sunar. Çalışma, Türkiye'deki üç örnek olguya odaklanmaktadır: Feshane ve Yedikule Gazhanesi (1989 ve 1992 yıllarındaki Seretonin etkinlikleri) ile Hasanpaşa Gazhanesi (tescillenme ve yeniden işlevlendirme süreci 1994 yılında başlamıştır). Metodoloji, sahada yapılan gözlemleri, sanatçılar, kültürel kolektif üyeleri, profesyoneller ve akademisyenler de dâhil olmak üzere çeşitli paydaşlarla yapılan görüşmeleri ve belirlenen değerlendirme kriterlerine göre analiz edilen arşiv incelemelerini içermektedir. Bulgular, yeniden işlevlendirme süreçlerinin kamu farkındalığını artırdığını, kentsel yenilenmeyi teşvik ettiğini ve endüstriyel alanların tarihsel, sosyal ve teknik değerlerini koruduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca çalışma, sivil inisiyatiflerin adil kentsel dönüşümleri şekillendirme ve karar alma süreçlerini etkilemedeki kritik rolünü vurgulamaktadır. Bu tez, endüstriyel mirasın korunmasına ilişkin tartışmalara katkıda bulunarak, mirası koruma ile çağdaş kentsel ihtiyaçları dengeleyen pratik çerçeveler sunar, katılımcı ve yaratıcı yaklaşımların sürdürülebilir kentsel kalkınmadaki dönüştürücü potansiyelini vurgular. |

Cultural heritage assets, including industrial sites, play a crucial role in shaping societal identities by establishing tangible and intangible connections to the past. Industrial heritage emerged as a new field of study in the mid-20th century, coinciding with the global decline of traditional industries. This shift left numerous factories, mines, railways, and other industrial structures abandoned, prompting scholars, architects, and conservationists to recognize their historical, cultural, and technical significance. Preserving and repurposing these sites for contemporary use requires comprehensive conservation practices and strategic planning to create sustainable narratives for their future. In Türkiye, industrial heritage conservation remains insufficiently developed, as it faces challenges such as limited public awareness, financial constraints, legislative gaps, and the physical degradation of structures. This thesis examines the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage through community-based and artist-driven heritage approaches, providing a comprehensive perspective on the transformation processes and the contributions of interdisciplinary artistic practices. The thesis focuses on three case studies in Türkiye: Feshane and Yedikule Gasworks (through Seretonin events of 1989 and 1992) and Hasanpaşa Gasworks (adaptive reuse process initiated in 1994). The methodology combines site observations, interviews with diverse stakeholders—including artists, members of cultural collectives, professionals, and academics—and archival analysis, assessed using designated evaluation criteria. The findings demonstrate that actions of adaptive reuse, which needs good strategies to realize qualified conservation examples, enhance public awareness, foster urban revitalization, and preserve industrial sites' historical, social, and technical values. Furthermore, the study highlights the pivotal role of civil initiatives in shaping equitable urban transformations and influencing decision-making processes. This thesis contributes to the discourse on industrial heritage conservation by offering practical frameworks that balance heritage conservation with contemporary urban needs, emphasizing the transformative potential of participatory and creative approaches in sustainable urban development. |
