In 1877 he published Bacon and Essex; theological writings include Johannine vocabulary, Philochristus, Onesimus, Silanus the Christian; most remembered as the author of Flatland: a romance of many dimensions, published under the pseudonym of A Square in 1884; died at his home, Hampstead, London on 12 October 1926; he is the eldest son of Edwin Abbott (1808-1882) [who was] headmaster of the Philological School, Marylebone)
