  • Information found: page 6 (Dr Henry Olivier, OMSG, CMG, DEng, DSc (Eng) hc; one of the most outstanding engineers South Africa has produced; associated with works in Africa, Asia and Europe; a consultant to the World Bank; born in 1914 in the Karoo town of Sutherland; in his youth taken by his parents to Rhodesia, where he was schooled; won the Beit Junior Engineering Scholarship to study at University of Cape Town; BSc (Civil Engineering) 1936; joined consulting firm in London, worked on designs for hydro-electric power generation in Scottish Highlands; worked for the War Office during World War II; worked in Iran and then Africa, supervised building of Owens Falls Dam, controlling outflow from Lake Victoria for benefit of Uganda, Sudan and Egypt; seconded to International Bank for Reconstruction and Development as project director of the Indus Basin Project; involved in other large dam projects, including in South Africa; in the early 1970s he returned to South Africa as chairman of the South African construction company responsible for part of the Orange-Fish Tunnel; engaged by Department of Water Affairs, including preliminary studies and drafting of treaty for the Lesotho Highlands Project; president of SAICE in 1976)
