A self-taught left-handed guitarist, he learned to play a right-handed guitar upside down. He served as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division of U.S. Army, formed an R&B band at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and was discharged from the army (1962). He led his group, Jimmy James and the Blue Flames (1965); released his first single, Hey Joe in 1966, and his first album, Are You Experienced? in 1967). He performed at the First International Monterey Pop Festival (1967); was named Artist of the Year by Billboard and Rolling Stone magazines (1968); and formed, Band of Gypsys, (1970). He died 18 September 1970 in London, England)
