678 1# - BIOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL DATA

  • Biographical or historical data: The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) was a U.S. military expedition led by Captain Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and Lieutenant William Clark (1770-1838) to explore the Louisiana Purchase and the Pacific Northwest. Over the duration of the trip, from May 14, 1804, to September 23, 1806, from St. Louis, Missouri, to the Pacific Ocean and back, the Corps of Discovery, as the expedition company was called, traveled nearly 8,000 miles (13,000 km). The expedition contributed significant geographic and scientific knowledge of the West, aided the expansion of the fur trade, and strengthened U.S. claims to the Pacific. Clark's maps portraying the geography of the West, printed in 1810 and 1814, were the best available until the 1840s. More detailed histories of the expedition may be found at
