Abdullatif, known by his pen-name Latifi, was bornin Kastamonu in c.a. 896 A.H/ c.a •. 1491 A.D •. He served as a katip in Rumeli,İstanbul, Rhodos and Egypt. His death is reported to have occurred in 990 A.H./ 1582 A.D. when he was about 94 years old. Latifi is a famous writer of tezkire in the 16th century. According to his own words in his Tezkire, he is the author of twelwe volumes, of which Tezkiretü'ş-Şu'ara seems to be the best. He completed his Tezkira in 953 A.H/ 1546 A.D. which appears to be the second of it's kind in Ottoman literature. It is composed of three parts : I. Introduction (Mukaddime), including a long seetion on the motives which urged him to compose his work. II. Threa Chapters (Fasıl), first of which is on thirteen sheik poets, second on seven Ottoman Sultane who proved themselves to be poets, from Murad II to Kanuni Sultan Suleiman and third on 314 Ottoman poets thamselves, who are contemporaries of the Sultans mentioned earlier, listed in alphabetical order. III. Conclusion (Hatime), in which Latifi states that he comleted his Tezkire in 953 A.H. /1546 A.D.,containing the accounts of 300 poets with their verses and added that he later presented it to Kanuni Sultan Suleiman. This thesis consists of two parts, the first of which is the main body of the study. This is alsa divided into four sub-chapters. In the first one the resder will find general ınformation on the tredition of Turkish tezkires until the time of Latifi. This chapter alsa includes the contents of Tezkire, the exact date of its composition and the primary motives which led him to compose it are investigated. The Second Chapter is devoted to Latifi's method in introducing the poets and the main emphasis is given to the ınformation on and evaluation of the works of the poets. The Third Chapter comperes and contrasts the Tezkire with the other works of its kind. And finally, t~e Tezkire is studied from the point of view of language and style. The First Part is followed by a Conclusion and Bibliography. The second part of the thesis is spared for the eritical texture of the Tezkire. Five menuseripts of the Tezkire (N, Nuruosmaniye Library No:3725, K, Kayseri Raşit Efendi Library No: 1160, Sı,Süleymaniye Library Fatih No: 4255, S2, Süleymaniye Libraray Kılıç Ali Paşa No: 780/1 and ü, The University of İstanbul Library No: 2646.) selected from sixty nine menuseripts available in the libraries in Turkey are eompared and eontrasted with eaeh other to obtain an annotated eritical text. The sixty nine menuseripts are introduced individually and shown on a tabla. The differences between several copies are given at the and of the text. Finally, an indexs is added including the names of people, works and places cited in the study.
